Reflection Statement:

While exploring the materials for my sculptures, I was drawn to wood because of its
strength and hardness.
I decided to include pieces that fit together naturally,
because of this my work may have lacked precision and yet they hold
an intuitive nature.

I will keep exploring and be excited about recycled materials
I want to learn more about focal points and how to capture a viewer
This piece allowed me to explore the side of myself that creates stories about something in the creation and exploration of materials.
The woodshop became an extension of my creativity and unlocked new abilities and formed relationships that exposed an endless amount of possibilities in creation.
Ideas that spark creativity are always worth investigating.

Ink and Paper Transformation

They See It All (11x14)

I writhed as this drawing was being conceived in my mind. Unwilling to commit to any idea until it became perfectly clear in my inner world. Sunflowers took seed in a month of grief and flowered on the day my pen got to work. I followed the trace of every feminine surface in the home and found myself carving out the body of a woman. In my world, this is not uncommon. Surrounded by women of magic, women who create life, women who hold tight through grief, who keep generations, women who see the future. Complex webbings; creation that is founded in sisterhood and an unshakable belief its value. "For though she was birthed, I know the burden she bares."

Janet Olivia Henry

When I see Janet Olivia Henry's work, the words cultural adornment come to mind.

Work #1 contains the element of space. Henry arranges many small plants, objects and a seated figurine within a limited platform, showing how space can be organized and filled. The backdrop makes the scene stand out, while the placements of items creates depth.

Work #2 contains the element of texture. Henry used an array of materials, including beads shells, feathers, nuts, gems and more that create a rich layered surface. The top is densely packed while the bottom thins and gives the feeling of movement.

A Few of My Favorite Things

 1. Sunbeam Armstrong Moon Phase Anniversary Clock, West Germany - The prized possession of the center of my world. Just like her, the clock is in perpetual motion, creating a blur when captured. It marks every moment we spend creating life together, watching time pass has turned into beauty.

2. West African Man Statue - A truly divine man, he called out to me. He said there was another way, so I listened with glee. He is wise and soft like a father should be. He may be just a statue, but to me he is more. Masculinity is a gift that can't be packaged or stored.

3. Mother's Ring - With this ring, my mother said, "yes". A ring from a sunken treasure chest. Deep in the sea, down went the Atocha, stones and riches at the bottom of the ocean. The story of love that shaped my world, that a person would do anything to please their girl.

4. "The Watcher" - She sits upon the mantle, observing it all. Her expression, unchanged, no movement at all. She does not judge but can clearly see. I can't help but wonder what she thinks of me.

5. "Broken Hands Can Still Hold"- A pair of clay hands, broken and glued back together.

6. Vase with Fresh Flowers and Water - Fresh flowers are a reminder of fleeting beauty, such is life. Clean water every day preserves them but cannot keep them from their inevitable fate.
